Seismic intensity Human perception and reaction
"0" Imperceptible to people, but recorded by seismommeters.
A person would not feel the tremor
"1" Felt slightly by some people keeping quiet in buildings.
Some of the people indoors may feel a slight tremor
"2" Felt by many people keeping quiet in buildings. Some people may be awoken.
Many of the people indoors will feel the tremor
"3" Felt by most people in buildings. Felt by some people walking. Many people are awoken.
Most of the people indoors will feel the tremor
"4" Most people are startled. Felt by most people walking. Most people are awoken.
Most of the people sleeping will wake up
"5Lower" Many people are frightened and feel the need to hold onto something stable.
Furniture may move, dishes and books may fall and/or glass windows may shatter
"5Upper" Many people find it hard to move ; walking is difficult without holding onto something stable.
Heavy furniture such as chests and dressers may fall in rooms and/or vending machines placed outside may also fall down
"6Lower" It is difficult to remain standing.
Difficult to be standing
"6Upper" It is impossible to remain to standing or move without crawling. People may be thrown through the air.
