There have been a troubling number of injuries to children after child safety seats on bicycles have, among other things, fallen off.
According to a survey of 581 parental guardians by Doctor Shinya Miyamoto of Tokyo University's Faculty of Medicine, more than 90% of respondents purchased a child safety seat. One out of three of them reported their child being injured while in a child safety seat.

Characteristic Injuries

1) About 70% of injuries happen when the child seat is attached behind the saddle or between the handle and saddle.

2) 30% of accidents happen while stopped (not only while moving)

3) 60% of children that fall from the child seat are injured.

Double Riding, Etc, is Illegal

Riding a bicycle with two people on it is against the law.

There are exceptions

A child in a child safety seat may ride if the rider is 16 years old and over.

A properly secured child properly carried on the back of a rider is 16 years old and over.

A bicycle with two child seats (*) can have two children riders if the rider is 16 years old and over.

* Please note that the bicycle must be specially constructed to allow two child seats and must have two child seats installed, as well as any other equipment necessary.


It is PROHIBITED to have two children in child safety seats and one mounted on the rider's back.

With a little caution from the guardian, we can generally protect children from injuries

Notes to prevent from accidents.

  • Don't let go of a bike on which a child is riding in the child safety seat.
  • Position the saddle so that both of your feet can reach the ground.
  • Respect the rules of the road.
  • Be sure to wear a helmet that is appropriate for a bicycle that is carrying a child in its safety seat.
